What do you find to be the most rewarding part of what you do as an attorney?
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the relief that my work can bring to my clients. When they first sign on and give a big sigh of relief that they no longer have to deal with the insurance companies harassing and confusing tactics. Further, the relief they exude once they have resolved their case for an amount they feel justly compensates them for their injuries never gets old. Knowing that my work can leave a lasting positive impact on my client’s (and their families) lives is what drives me to keep pushing forward.
Each year, SuperLawyers selects the top attorneys under 40 in various practice areas. No more than 2.5% are named to the Rising Stars list.
What has surprised you most about being an attorney?
I would say the most surprising part of being an attorney so far may be Oregon specific, but it is how collegial the local bar has been. On the whole, most attorneys I have worked with have been incredibly friendly and not completely averse to finding some common ground. This goes to show that while our legal system may be predicated on adversarial litigation, that does not mean that the attorney on the other side is a bad person or wishes my clients to receive amounts that do not justly compensate them.
To commemorate this achievement, we had a quick Q & A with Philip to find out what has been most rewarding and surprising about the practice of law so far.
What would you change about the field of law if you could?
I would love to live in a world where personal injury attorneys don’t exist because insurance companies do their job and compensate people fairly for their injuries.
